Join Alexandria Celebrates Women for the next ACW Salon, a monthly gathering of leading women thinkers and changemakers in an informal setting designed to spark conversation and collaboration.

The April Salon takes place on Thursday, April 18 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., featuring Kate Garvey, director of the City of Alexandria Department of Community and Human Services; and Debbie Evans, the Division Chief of the City of Alexandria Sexual Assault Center and Domestic Violence Program. The event will take place at The Hub at Canal Center, located at 99 Canal Center in Old Town North.

"There are few people in our area who do more work advancing women's issues and supporting women than Kate and Debbie," said Alexandria Celebrates Women president Pat Miller. "Alexandria Celebrates Women was founded in part to raise money for the Safehouse, and we are excited to share the important work that they do."

Garvey is the Director of the Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) for the City of Alexandria. DCHS is a unified department that is focused on the safety, well-being, and economic security of residents. The Department provides economic support, behavioral health, developmental disability, early childhood, housing, workforce development, domestic violence, child welfare and aging services to more than 23,000 residents each year. Garvey joined the City in 2014. Prior to her work in Alexandria, Garvey served as the Chief of Children, Youth and Family Services of the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services for more than 10 years.

Evans is the Division Chief of the Sexual Assault Center and Domestic Violence Program in the City of Alexandria. The Alexandria Domestic Violence Program and Sexual Assault Center offers support to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and their families and friends, including crisis intervention and emotional support; advocacy with medical, police, and court systems; and short-term individual and group counseling information and referrals; they also provide trainings, information, and presentations to local schools and organizations. Evans has worked for the City since 2000, serving as an assistant residential coordinator for five years, and as a social worker for 10 years.

The event is free and open to all.

Alexandria Celebrates Women (ACW) is a volunteer-run, 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit organization with a two-fold purpose: to raise needed funds for the Alexandria Domestic Violence Safehouse and to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of Alexandria, Virginia’s women of the past, present and future.
